WATER PROPERTIES

BY CELESTE GIBSON

ADHESION

  • Water is attracted to other substances
  • Water adheres to wax paper

COHESION

  • Water sticking to water
  • In a cup, water stays together

CAPILLARY ACTION

  • Movement of water in a porous substance
  • Water 'climbs' up a paper towel

SURFACE TENSION

  • The property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force due to the cohesive nature of its molecules

UNIVERSAL SOLVENT

  • Water is called universal solvent because it dissolves more substances than any other

TURBIDITY

  • Measure of clarity in a liquid
  • The turbidity of the lake was clear

COLOR

  • Color in water is caused by the way molecules absorb the red end of spectrum light
  • Red water from a sink is often caused by rusted water pipes

CONDUCTIVITY

  • Pure water is actually an insulator but as it absorbs the things around it, it stops being a insulator

COMPRESAABILITY

  • Water is not easily compressed but if squeezed hard enough, water can give way a little bit

SALINITY

  • Is the amount of salt in water
  • Oceans have a lot of salt but freshwater landform have very little
