What is water pollution?

  • Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater

TYPES OF WATER POLLUTION

Types:

  • Nutrients Pollution
  • Surface Water pollution
  • Oxygen depleting
  • Ground Water Pollution
  • Microbiological
  • Suspended matter
  • Chemical Water Pollution

Types of water pollution

  • Oil Spillage
  • Industrial waste

INDUSTRIAL CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION

INDUSTRIAL WASTE
Waste water from manufacturing or chemical processes in industries contributes to water pollution. Industrial waste water usually contains specific and readily identifiable chemical compounds. Water pollution is concentrated within a few subsectors, mainly in the form of toxic wastes and organic pollutants.

OIL POLLUTION

by oil industries

OIL POLLUTION

  • An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine areas, due to human activity, and is a form of pollution. The term is usually applied to marine oil spills, where oil is released into the ocean or coastal waters, but spills may also occur on land.

SEWAGE AND WASTE WATER

SEWAGE AND WASTE WATER

  • Sewage and Wastewater. Domestic households, industrial and agricultural practices produce wastewater that can cause pollution of many lakes and rivers. Sewage is the term used for wastewater that often contains faeces, urine and laundry waste. There are billions of people on Earth, so treating sewage is a big priority.

UNDERGROUND STORAGE AND TUBE LEAKS

The resulting water pollution causes the quality of the water to deteriorate and affects aquatic ecosystems. Pollutants can also seep down and effect groundwater deposits. Saida's sewage and industrial wastes are discharged into the rivers. Because of this, pollutants enter groundwater, rivers, and other water bodies.

Prevention of water pollution

  • Pollution prevention is reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production processes, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.
