WARM & COLD AIR MASSES

COLD AIR MASS

COLD FRONT AND COLD AIR MASS ARE THE SAME

WARM AIR MASS

WARM FRONT AND WARM AIR MASS ARE THE SAME

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT WARM AIR MASSES

  • if warmer air is replacing cold air, then it is a warm front.
  • Warm fronts move more slowly than cold fronts because it is more difficult for the warm air to move
  • You will often see high clouds like cirrus, cirrostratus, and middle clouds like altostratus ahead of a warm front
  • Warm fronts usally move from southwest to northwest
  • When a warm front passes the air becomes noticeable warmer

IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT COLD AIR MASSES

  • On a weather forecast map, a cold front is represented by a solid line with blue triangles
  • If colder air is replacing warmer air, it is a cold front
  • Commonly, when the cold front is passing, winds become gusty; there is a sudden drop in temperature
  • Cold air is dense so it is able to quickly plow a warm air mass ahead of it.
  • Air masses bring a verity of weather

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT WARM AIR MASSES

  • WARM AIR CAN MOVE UPWARD AND DOWNWARD
  • WARM AIR MASSES ARE VERY HOT
  • WARM AIR MASSES EQUALS WARM WEATHER
  • WARM AIR MASSES USALLY MAKE ICE MELT

INTERETING FACTS ABOUT COLD AIR MASSES

  • WHEN A COLD AIR MASS AND A WARM AIR MASS COME TOGETHER IT CREATES A FRONT
  • COLD AIR MASSES CAND BE ALL TYPES OF COLD WEATHER
  • IN THE NORTH POLE IT IS ALWAYS A COLD FRONT
  • COLD AIR MASSES CREATE COLD PRESSURE
  • COLD AIR MASSES MAKE ICE FREEZE
