CAUSES

  • Practice of British Impressment (Mainly Chesapeake)
  • Embargos, which hurt the US more and provided War Hawks support
  • British Orders in Council - weakened American trade
  • British support in Indian attacks (Tecumseh's group is the igniter)

FIRST REAL ATTACK WAS ON BRITISH CANADA

In 1814 we took a little trip,
along with Colonel Jackson (Andrew Jackson) down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
and we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans. - Johnny Horton's Battle of New Orleans

OLIVER HAZARD PERRY

  • Took command of building fleets on Lake Erie
  • "We have met the enemy and they are ours."
  • Contructed a fleet in a race against Commander Barclay, his British equal
  • The fleet consisted of the USS Lawrence and USS Niagara
  • Perry encountered Barclay and went into the Battle of Lake Erie

WILLIAM HULL

  • Governor of the Michigan Territory
  • Surrendered to the British at Fort Detriot
  • Was nearly hanged for his actions after the war

The British attacked Fort McHenry, which Francis Scott Key was in, and they resisted. The next morning he saw the U.S. Flag still flying high, which led him to write the poem: The Star Spangled Banner; later the poem was set to a British drinking song.

WAR HAWKS

  • Led by Henry Clay, later elected Speaker of the House
  • Consisted of younger congressmen from the DR party
  • The War Hawks linked the *attacks back to British Canada causing a desire of war
  • *Attacks were made by Tecumseh and his forces
  • It was believed that Britain was funding the Indians while attacking

Columbia (to the far left) is teaching Napoleon a lesson in Respect and Retribution while John Bull is being told of the American determination to maintain high-sea freedom. (Going against impressmenti and blockades)

BURNING OF WASHINGTON

  • On Aug. 24, 1814 British troops entered DC and set fire the White House
  • The attack was made in retaliation of the American on York.
  • James Madison and his wife fled to Maryland
  • Dolley, Madison's wife, only took a full portrait of George Washington to save

EFFECTS

  • Growth of US manufacturing
  • Weakened Native Americans
  • Increased American patriotism
  • Proved the country's strength
  • Confidence - ability to prosper
