A computer network is a number of computers linked together to allow them to share resources eg: exchange data, share files, send messages

WAN stands for Wide Area Network. A Wan is made up by several LANs joining together. Unlike LAN, WANs are geographically spread over a large area. Moreover, it is mostly used in corporations that have been established in different countries. WAN uses optical fibre cables and they are connected through routers or modems. eg of WAN: Internet

USES OF WAN
1) WAN is used in space stations since it has various geographical locations.
2) WAN is used in companies where there are branches
3) The internet is a WAN; it has many resources ( messages to be sent, files to be shared )

ADVANTAGES
1) Remote access; A company could allow its employees to access its local network from home using their internet connection. Flexible for workers
2) Expensive peripherals ( printers ) can be shared by all computers on the network without having to buy a different peripheral for each computer

ADVANTAGES
3) Everyone on the network can use the same data. This avoids problems where some users may have older information than others
4) Share information/ files over a large area

DISADVANTAGES
1) Setting up a network can be expensive and complicated
2) Security is an issue when many different people have ability to use information from other computers

DISADVANTAGES
3) Once set up, maintaining a network is a full-time job which requires supervisors & technicians to be employed
4) Vulnerable to hackers

Disadvantages
5) Speed: Data trasnfer rate is usually 10-20 mbps. Not the fastest of network
6) Harder to set up; since it is a wide network made of multiple LANs, it is complicated to set up a WAN network
