  • Many acts of violence gained national attention
  • On march 7th, state troopers attacked peaceful marchers
  • This event persuaded President Johnson to issue a call-
  • And to hold hearings on a strong voting rights law.

THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT ENTAILS

  • Nationwide prohibition of voting discrimination
  • Enforced the voting rights stated in the 14th and 15th amendments
  • Gave racial minorities the right to vote across the country
  • Outlaws literacy tests
  • No state or local govt. can impose any voting qualifications
