PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895.
The first official ball was chosen in 1896.
Volleyball became popular in the 1920's because it wasn't expensive and it can be played indoors and outdoor.
It was first recognized as a sport in 1923 by the National Amateur Athletic Federation
The original name was "Mintonette", but was changed to volleyball shortly thereafter.
RULES IN THE 1920'S
- There were to be three hits per side
- There wasn't a limit of people on the court
- Back row attack rule
The goal of the game is to get a rally going between both teams.
The name volleyball came to be when passers-by noticed that the ball was volleying back and forth.
The set and hit was renamed to be the spike in 1916 in the Philippines.
The game used to consist of nine innings, each inning would have 3 serves from each team.
Japan, Russia, and the United States all started National Volleyball Associations in the 1920's.
The Russians dominated the sport.
Today, there are over 800 million people who play volleyball at least once a week.
