Volcano:
An opening in the ground where molten rock and gas is erupted

  • Volcano
  • A vent where molten rock and gases arr erupted from the earth's interior

I focused on researching strategies and information on volcanoes, including cause, effect, mount st helens, and why volcanoes erupt violently

RESEARCH PROCESS

  • Before starting researching i knew that natural disasters were catastrophic events that were caused by nature
  • I knew that research meant using many different sources and taking notes
  • Before starting this unit i expected to learn about how all disasters were caused

RESEARCH PROCESS CONTINUED

  • I hoped to learn how pressure builds up in earth's mantle which leads to violent volcano eruptions

CAUSES OF VOLCANOES

  • Magma formed by molten rock is forced to the surface by pressure
  • Volcanic rock builds up around the opening and over time it becomes a mountain

EFFECTS OF VOLCANOES

  • Volcanoes can destroy nearby civilizations
  • Volcanoes can release harmful gases into the atmosphere and make the climate cooler
  • Earthquakes and wildfires can be caused by volcanic eruptions

MAJOR OCCURENCE: mount st helens-1857

  • from march on earthquakes a series of small earthquakes were recorded almost daily
  • eruption occured on may 18, 1857
  • 62 people were killed (mostly ones who got into restricted area)

MY RESEARCH QUESTION: why do volcanoes erupt violently?

  • Pressure builds up under earth's crust
  • heat melts rock and heats up gases
  • magma and gases need to escape from earth's interior

research process: obstacles and breakthroughs while researching

  • sometimes i struggled with finding the information i needed, but i worked through it
  • i will use cornell notes and the outline to take notes in the future
  • i will avoid using non-credible sources
  • i will also avoid getting mad because i couldn't find what i needed

research process: stages of the research

  • take notes on several different resources
  • sort out the relevant and irrelevant information
  • organize information by category/topic
  • summarized information into powerpoint slides
  • Cite sources
