• The words we need know to understand what we hear.

Speaking Vocab

• The words we use when we speak.

Reading Vocab

• The words we need to know to understand what we read.

Writing Vocab

• The words we use in writing.

Indirect Vocabulary Learning

• Engaging in daily oral language
• Listening to adults reading to them
• Reading on their own

Direct Vocabulary Learning

• Specific word instruction
• Instruction that promotes active engagement
• Repeated exposure to vocabulary in many contexts
