VISUAL SCAFFOLDING, ONE NOTE AND ELL STUDENTS

Valerie Snyder Concordia University, Portland, Oregon
Sousa states for English Language Learner to learn new vocabulary when the words are embedded in meaningful contexts and when the words are provided with frequent opportunities for repetition and use. ( Sousa, 2011, p. 60).

Creating a digital glossary using one note creates a meaningful opportunity to learn and practice with the content vocabulary.

WHAT IS ONE NOTE

  • One note is a digital notebook where teacher can create an learning space where students can make connections to what they are learning in the classroom.
  • All the class resources are in one place.
  • Students can access information anywhere there is a computer and internet
One note is like a digital notebook where students can access notes and add images and diagrams. Students can also collaborate together on assignment or activity. (what is one note?, 2018)?

Students are able to connect to one note by signing into their school email.

The one note notebook can be a current and future personal resource for our students.
Students will take great pride in their work.

BENEFITS OF ONE NOTE

  • Digital copy of all the class notes and activities in one location.
  • Students can collaborate on assignments.
  • Digital notebooks can make it easier for students to retain information.
  • Students record themselves
  • Use google to find visuals of key vocabulary
  • Student access the information anywhere there is a computer and internet.
“Technology can help to personalize learning for ELL students and let them learn at their own pace”(Strietelmeier,2017).

He also states the use of one note increased engagement, students can access prior knowledge in a meaningful way.

Using this technology will help our English Language Learner access their own background knowledge and make connections to the content we are trying to teach.

The student can also record themselves practicing the content vocabulary. Before having to say it in front of the class. (Moore, 2017)
This could be beneficial because students can practice with the vocabulary orally as many times as they need.

HOW TO USE OnE NOTE

  • Students log into school email : Reynolds.k12.or.us
  • Click on the apps and click on class notebook
  • Click on the energy folder and find energy glossary assignment for example and instructions.
Students easy access to one note through their school email account.

The one note notebook holds everything in one spot.

The teacher can upload the notes and class activities so students can refer back to notes at a later date and complete assignments.

VISUAL SCAFFOLDING

  • Helping students make connections to content vocabulary by including photographs or drawing. (Harrell & Jordan,2016)
  • These files are hard or digital copies.
  • Provide visual support to build connections.
  • The use of visual scaffolding can help students schema with the vocabulary.
Visual scaffolding in a traditional setting is where the teacher photographs or drawings representing the content vocabulary. These pictures can be a hard physically copy displayed in the classroom or a digital format.

Having the pictures and drawing helps our students make connections and access their background knowledge or schema.

In everyday activities in my classroom as we are learning new vocabulary we draw pictures along with the photographs I post around the room.

VISUAL SCAFFOLDING AND ONENOTE TOGETHER

  • Using the one note the students will create an digital glossary.
  • The students will use the definition we create from the text then search google to find visuals and paste them into their one notebooks.
  • By finding their own images of the content vocabulary that makes sense to them.
By combining one note and visual scaffolding to have students create a digital glossary students are able to create their own digital glossary with the vocabulary words, definitions and real life examples.

Students are able to draw on their own personal background knowledge to find pictures or drawings that represent the new vocabulary.
By doing this students can develop deeper connections to the new content vocabulary.

The digital glossary will also be a personal resource for the students in the future.

When using technology to help our ELL students, they can work at their own level and at their own pace. Students are more likely to take a risk at try something new because only the teacher will see it.
If students are more involved in their learning then they will make more progress on their language development.

Using One Note and the visual scaffolding can be done in any subject or content area in the classroom.

VISUAL SCAFFOLDING AND ONENOTE TOGETHER

  • Personal digital glossary and the visuals teacher uses in lessons can help the students build deeper connections to the vocabulary.
  • The digital notebook can be a future resource to the students.
