VISUAL LEARNING

By: Arthur Symonette

What is Visual Learning?

  • ideas, concepts, and data, are related to/with images and techniques
  • visualization of terms, concepts, and ideas make for simpler understanding
  • visual learning can be divided into three categories: reading, pictures, and symbols

In Simple Terms.....

PICTURES + BRAIN = UNDERSTANDING

READING

  • reading is a type of visual learning
  • seeing the words and ideas helps the student understand the overall concep
  • the actual words that are displayed add to the interest of the student
  • physical letters and being able to see them makes it easier to understand concepts and "big picture" idea

PICTURES

  • the obvious, pictures can tell a story without any words
  • visually looking at concepts through pictures allows the viewer to think more abstractly
  • things make more sense when there is a visual to reinforce what is being learned or taught
  • like the old saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words"

SYMBOLS

  • symbols stand for something else much like this + stands for plus, and, addition, etc.
  • the context in which a symbol is read makes the difference such as @ may be the continuation of an e-mail or meet me @ so and so place in a text
  • for a visual learner symbols represent a shortcut to understanding

STRATEGIES

  • being a visual learner has its advantages and downfalls
  • there are many strategies that can be used for online course work
  • 3 are: everything is on the computer (typing), no noises, and pictures

COMPUTER

  • typing= visually appealing and easier to understand
  • reading books online helps focusing
  • no outside distractions or noises

SILENCE

  • to most people that is unwanted but silence is a luxury
  • easier to focus
  • no distractions

PICTURES

  • of course the obvious
  • pictures are a major part of how learning is done
  • whether its doodling or mapping out what was learned

Differences

  • doodling would not happen in a face to face class environment
  • would be more focused on writing everything the professor says

continued.....

  • it would be a lot more stressful trying to write and listen at the same time
  • not a good listener + boring teacher = terrible notes

KEY POINTS

  • learning is stressful
  • visual learners learn through reading, pictures and symbols
  • strategies= computer, silence, pictures
