PRESENTATION OUTLINE

From smartphones to television sets, iPads to movies, the content in the media has become alarming.

Professor Jeffrey Johnson of Columbia University reported, "kids who watched more than 1 hour of TV when they were teenagers were 60% more likely to be involved in assaults/fights" (qtd. in Hermes online).

Children want to be brave and noble, almost like superheroes.

But once violence is not followed by consequences, children begin to see "violence as an appropriate method of problem solving" (Hermes online).

With current unrealiable movie ratings, "action movies with body counts in the thousands...get the less restrictive PG-13" (Horn and Zeitchik online). This gives children the opportunity to watch movies without the consent of an adult.

An experiment done on college students showed those "who watched movies containing violent sexual acts viewed rape as a less negative crime" (Smith online). The movies desensitize their feelings toward sexual violence and this continues to degrade.

DISTRIBUTION OF VIOLENCE, sEX, AND LANGUAGE IN PG MOVIES

Of the 93%, 49% had a combination of violence along with something else. A little more than half of the movies contained aggressive media.
