When Did it start?

  •   May 7th 1954 Viet Minh forces won the Battle of Dien Bien Phu
  • Ended French involvement in Indochina
  • Under terms Vietnam was split at the 17th parallel
  • Elections to establish an unified government
  • South Vietnam fought this power starting the Vietnam War

Deaths

  • Total number of U.S. soldiers deployed to Vietnam 536,100 
  • Total number of U.S. casualties in the Vietnam War 58,220
  • Total number of U.S. soldiers wounded in the Vietnam War 303,644
  • Total military casualties from both sides 1.475 million
  • Total wounded from both sides 2.094 million

How did it end?

  • US pulled out of North Vietnam
  • South take over the job in 1973
  • In 1975 communist forces seized control of Saigon ending the Vietnam War
  • Vietnam was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year
