THE VIETNAM WAE WAS THE LONGEST WAR IN HISTORY

  • and the most unpopular of the 20th century.
  • It began to try to end communist of North Vietnam.
  • It was called the "American war" in Vietnam.
  • Communist country's began sending supply's to North Vietnam.
  • The French and United States supported South Vietnam.

THE WAR WAS BRUTAL

  • It was estimated that almost 60,000 American deaths
  • And 2 million Vietnamese deaths.
  • The War ended for the U.S. By pulling their forces out of Vietnam.
  • This did not end the war for the Vietnamese and fighting continued
  • until April 1975 when Saigon fell to the communists.

MY LAI

  • Took place on March 16, 1968
  • Involved the men of Charlie Company 11th Brigade
  • They went on a killing spree in the village of My Lai Vietnam
  • Lt. William Calley gave the order to wipe out everyone in the village
  • This included the elderly, women, and children who were unarmed

MY LAI CONT.

  • Over 300 hundred people were slaughtered
  • The nation find out about it until November, 1969
  • They nation was horrified when Seymour Hersh published an article on it
  • Rose some serious questions about the military leadership in Vietnam
  • Calley was dishonorably discharged and convicted for murder
