CONFLICT IN VIETNAM (CONTINUED)

  • In 1955 strong anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem gained control of the south
  • The cold war was happening at this time, so the U.S. sided with Ngo
  • With American support Ngo arrested about 100,000 communist supporters
  • Many of those arrested were tortured or even executed
  • By 1959 North Vietnam soldiers and communist supporters had began engaging in firefights

WAR BEGINS

  • Some of Ngo's own generals killed him and his brother 1963
  • About two weeks later JFK was assassinated
  • In 1964 Vietnamese forces attacked two U.S. ships, and the U.S. bombed Veitnam
  • In 1965 JFK's replacement, Lyndon B. Johnson, sent 82,000 troops to Vietnam
  • Called for 175,000 more by the end of the year

STRATEGY OF ATTTRITION

  • The U.S. had a strategy of attrition in Vietnam
  • This meant that their main goal was to kill as many enemies as possible rather than trying to capture territory
  • By the end of 1967 about 500,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Vietnam
  • At this time many Americans were against the war, and their numbers were increasing due to horrific images
  • about the war

CONFLICT IN VIETNAM

  • During WWII Japan had captured the French controlled region of Vietnam
  • Communist Ho Chi Minh formed the Viet Minh to free Vietnam
  • Ho gained control of the North, but the French supported Bao Dai
  • contolled the South the
  • The two sides negotiated and agreed on a nation wide election in 1956

TET OFFENSIVE

  • By the end of 1967 North Vietnam was growing impatient
  • About 70,000 North Vietnamese forces attacked South Vietnam
  • The U.S. and South Vietnam struck back quickly and North Vietnam only held the land
  • they had captured for 1-2 days
  • Reports of the attack stunned the U.S. public, and Oresident Johnson agreed to start seeking peace

VIETNAM WAR ENDS

  • Both sides launched many unsuccessful attacks until the end of the war
  • The war ended in January 1973
  • Longest war in U.S. history
