1968 TEN DATES

  • Elements of 3 NVA divisions begin to mass near the marine base at Khe Sanh
  • Jan. 21st: Shattering barnage of shells, mortars, and rockets slammed into the marine base of Khe Sanh
  • Jan. 30: Tet holiday, more than 100 cities/towns, shock attacks by Vietcong Sapper-commands
  • January:the Vietcong Sapper-commands are followed by wave after wave supporting troop.
  • January:By the end of the city battles, 37,000 Vietcong troops deployed for the Tet that have been killed

1968 TEN DATES CONTINUED...

  • Many more have been wounded/captured, and the fighting had created more than half million refuges
  • Feb. 23: over 1,300 artillery rounds hit marine base Khe Sanh and its outpost
  • Feb. 23: It was more than the previous day attacks
  • March, 6: Marines wait for massive assault, NVA forces retreat into the jungle around Khe Sanh
  • March, 11: Massive search/destroy sweeps are launched against vietcong remnants around Saigon an other parts of south vietnam

1968 TEN DATES CONTINUED...

  • March, 16: In the hamlet of Lai, U.S. charlie company kills 200 civilians
  • March, 16 later that day: one member of the divisions is found guilty of war crimes
  • March, 17: The repercussions of the atrocity is felt through the army
  • April, 8: U.S. Forces in operation pegasus finally retake route 9, ending the siege of Khe Sanh.

5 DATES FROM OTHER YEARS OF WAR

  • April, 29 1970: South Vietnamese troops attack Cambodia, pushing toward vietcong bases.
  • May, 1 1970: 2 days kater, a U.S. Force of 30,000- including 3 U.S. Divisions-mount a 2nd attack.
  • February, 8 1971: In operation Lam Son 719, 3 south Vietnamese division drive into Laos.
  • February, 8: It was to attack 2 major enemy bases. Unknowingly they were walked into a trap.
  • June: More than 9,000 south Vietnamese troops were killed or wounded.

5 DATES FROM OTHER YEARS OF WAR CONTINUED..

  • More than two-thirds of S. Vietnamese armed vehicles are destroyed.
  • Along with hundreds of U.S. Helicopters and planes.
  • April,13 1975: Five weeks into its campaign, the North Vietnamese Army has made stunning gains.
  • S. Vietnamese Army has lost its best units, over a third of its men, and almost half its weapons.
  • April 30, 1975:At 4:03 a.m., two U.S. Marines are killed in a rocket attack at Saigon's Tan Son Nhut airport.

5DATES FROM OTHER YEARS OF THE WAR CONTINUED...

  • Theyre last Americans to die in the Vietnam War.
  • At dawn, the last Marines of the force guarding the U.S. embassy lift off.
  • Only hours later, looters ransack the embassy, and North Vietnamese tanks role into Saigon, ending the war.
  • 15 years, nearly a million NVA/Vietcong troops an a quarter of a million S. Vietnamese soldiers have died.
  • Hundred and thousands of civilians have been killed.
