Verbal Irony

A device in which what one says does not match what he means.

Example:
"We was all glad as we could be, but Tom was the gladdest of all because he had a bullet in the calf of his leg."

Sarcasm

The use of irony to mock or convey contempt. 

Example: "I’m trying to imagine you with a personality."

Hyperbole

A device that uses exaggeration for emphasis. 

Example: "It was so cold I saw polar bears wearing jackets."

Understatement

A figure of speech where the words written mean less than is actually meant

Example: "It's a bit yellow" - while describing a very yellow canary.

Oxymoron

A contradictory of combined words.

Example: "Alone together" "Painfully beautiful" "Pretty ugly" "Deafening silence"
