PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Very dry, no water on its surface
  • Covered by flat plains with thousands of volcanoes
  • 6 mountain regions make up 1/3 of its surface
  • Corona structures that range from 95-360miles
  • Tesserae-raised areas with riges and valleys

What is strange about the rotation of venus?
It does not follow the rotation of other planets therefore it's rotation is considered "backwards"

What is the difference between prograde and retrograde?
Prograde rotates the same direction as their orbits and retrograde rotates the opposite way

How is venus' atmosphere different from earth's? Surface temperature and pressure are much greater and the temperature drops rapidly. The upper of the atmosphere
is much colder than earths but the lower is hotter than earth's.

Infrared data from an instrument on the venus spacecraft found 9 hotspots that have been identified as active volcanoes.

Why is there no liquid water on venus? The surface is so hot it would cause any water to boil away. Extreme heat slowly evaporated the water and strong solar winds stripped the molecules from Venus.

Why do scientists think there used to be water on venus? Earth and Venus were formed the same way and they got water from the rocks and the commets.

SIMILAR FEATURES FOUND ON EARTH AND VENUS

  • Canyons
  • Volcanoes
  • Rift valleys, craters
  • Mountains
  • Plains

WHAT MAKES VENUS UNIQUE?

  • More volcanoes than any other planet
  • A day is longer than a year
  • Its nearly earths twin
  • Air pressure 90x greater than earths
  • Brightest planet in the sky

FUN FACTS!

  • Hottest planet
  • Named after roman goddess of love
  • 2nd largest terrestrial planet
  • Earths sister planet because they're similar
  • Layer of sulfric acid clouds cover the surface
