  • Venice in Shakespeare's time was controlled by men and is the city of commerce where wealth flows in and out with ships.
  • Antonio is an example of a merchant that lived in Venice. He is successful, rich but sadly depressing.

  • Belmont is controlled by women, and Venice is controlled by men.
  • In act 1 scene 2, it is shown that all that they have said is about love. (Show example)
