Velcro was in invented by a Swiss engineer, George de Mestral in 1948. George got the idea of Velcro from the burrs that attached themselves to his clothing.
Velcro is used for many things such as fasteners on clothing, bags, shoes and gloves. Other uses include hanging items such as art work, Christmas lights and posters.
Velcro uses a hook and loop fastening system. One side of the Velcro has mesh tops and the other side has tiny hooks. When the two sides come together, they adhere. They are easily separated by pulling the two sides apart.
