Vector and Bitmap Images

By Lydia Ly

Bitmap Images

  • They are created by graphics packages
  • Also consists of shapes called objects
  • If the objects are large it doesn't take up a lot of computer memory
  • Therefore the file size of a vector graphic is often very small
  • When you re-size the images they do not lose quality

Vector Images

  • They're made up of different colored pixals
  • Taking a picture with a different camera is creating a bitmap
  • It is possible to edit each individual pixal
  • The computer has to store every pixal
  • Therefore the file size is quite big

The difference

  • Vector images loses quality when you re-size them
  • A bitmap image stays the same
  • A vector image is big due to the computer storing every pixal
  • A bitmap image file size is quite small
