WILLIAM QUANTRILL AND QUANTRILL'S RAIDERS

LEGACY OF VIOLENCE AND WESTERN OUTLAW
*Born in Ohio 1837

*worked as a school teacher for many years of his life, but also made a living by gambling

*Moved to Kansas after he was wanted for murder and soon joined the Confederate side of the Civil War

*Became the leader of raiders who harassed and tortured Union soldiers and pro-Union civilians

*Quantrill led the Lawrence Massacre in Kansas and killed 183 men and boys, murdering them in front of their families, and setting fire to some of their homes and businesses

*Became a celebrated figure in the eyes of Southern supporters

OUR NATIONS OLDEST FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY
*First 13 U.S. Marshals appointed by George Washington

*Served process issues from federal courts, handled court moves and made sure of the presence of prisoners and jurors

*During the Civil Rights Era, the U.S. Marshals enforced educational integration and protected Freedom Riders, segregated transportation, and protests.

*In charge of taking federal census every 10 years
