DESCRIPTION

  • Noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years.
  • Develop from the smooth muscular tissue of the uterus

CAUSES

  • A single cell divides repeatedly, eventually creating a firm, rubbery mass distinct from nearby tissue.
  • Some fibroids go through growth spurts, and some may shrink on their own.

symptoms

  • Need to urinate more often
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding

TREATMENTS

  • Birth control pills
  • Intrauterine devices
  • Iron supplements

PREVENTIONS

  • There is no known treatment that prevents uterine fibroids

PROGNOSIS

  • As many as 3 out of 4 women have uterine fibroids sometime during their lives
  • Most women do not know when they have it
