What are primary sources?

What are primary sources? Anyone?

Primary Sources are...

  • original materials
  • artifact
  • document
  • recording
  • RAW materials of history
They are the RAW. PIECES of HISTORY. Things you can hold in your hand. Not encyclopedia articles or papers others have written. It's the actual artifact itself.

Why use primary sources?

Does anyone know WHY we should use primary sources?? Anyone??

Why use primary sources?

  • TONS of resources
  • Great for differentiation
  • ELA standards
  • Essential Standards in SS
  • Build background knowledge
  • Lots of lesson plans ready made
  • Engaging
  • Promotes student inquiry
  • Critical thinking and analysis skills
There are lots of reasons why. Number one? It's in the curriculum. But using primary sources can build background knowledge, give insight to historical events, engage students. But mostly? Primary sources help students to make inferences and form their own questions.

Does anyone recognize this building? It's one of my favorite places. This is the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with more than 162 million items on approximately 838 miles of bookshelves.

It's the largest library in the world. Raise your hand if you have been here. 162 million items, more being added every day. Over 800 miles of bookshelves. I won't get into the history of the building, but if you ever get a chance there are free tours. Treat yourself.

Book backdrops. Set the purpose for learning. Building schema, background knowledge. Anyone here read One Crazy Summer? Rita Williams Garcia? Won a few awards a couple of years ago. I loved that book. My girls couldn't get into it. They had a hard time. This book is set in 1968 in Oakland California. Black Panthers, Haight Asbury. Hippies. I know that, many of you know that. But I've had a lifetime of building background knowledge. Young kids? Many times we need to front load it for them.

Any questions?
