Uranium was discovered in 1789 by Martin Klaproth in Germany.
The name Uranium derives from the planet Uranus.
Uranium can be found in many different types of rocks, also the element can be found in large amounts of pitchblende and carnotite.
The central use for the element is fuel for nuclear reactors for submarines, power plants etc.
Uranium is also a key ingredient in Atomic Bombs.
THE DANGERS OF URANUIM
- Although uranium is used a fuel source, there are many dangers to its use
- Firstly and possibly the biggest danger is that it is a radioactive element.
- Uranium was used in the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the second world war
- And the element was used in the Chernobyl reactor.
- Plus in the wrong hands, uranium can be a deadly force.
