PRESENTATION OUTLINE

URANIUM

ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL NATURAL RECOURCE

Uranium's main use is to fuel nuclear power plants...

WHAT ARE URANIUM used for?

It can generate power, and kill people.

The other less common use of Uranium is to make atom bombs.

Atom bombs kill millions of people by smashing cities and making the land unusable for a very very long time:-(

HOW IS URANIUM MADE ?
Uranium is made from supernova explosions

Fun Fact: Anything heavier than iron (Fe26) is produced in a supernova explosion!

Fun Fact: After the Big Bang, there were only hydrogen. Because of gravity, hydrogen forms stars, helium, carbon, oxygen... until iron(Fe26) are made in the stars...

... When the stars run out of elements to burn, it explodes. This is called a supernova explosion. Heavier elements like copper, silver, gold and uranium are made during the supernova explosion!

That means there can't be anymore uranium on this earth.

Where do we find uranium?

The Earth's crust from surface to 25 km down contains 100 trillion tons of Uranium, and the ocean contains 10 billion.

URANIUM IS MINED IN...

  • Kazakhstan
  • Canada
  • Australia

Untitled Slide

The amount of usage:

In 2010, 53 thousand tons of Uranium was used!

Uranium ore:

US$ 59 per pound of Uranium in the form of ore
It's not very expensive...

TWO WAYS TO CONSERVE URANIUM:

  • Use less electricity
  • No nuclear bombs!!!

But it is
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!
The Earth's core is hot because of uranium. We cannot live without the hot core...

... Because when the core cools down, Earth will loose its magnetic shield. Solar wind will blow away our atmosphere and the earth will its air and water, nothing lives (like Mars)

Uranium makes energy without carbon dioxide!
But...

IF AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS...

IT WILL RUIN A LARGE AREA FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS

For example: Chernobyl was ruined by a nuclear power plant accident :-(

Fun Fact: Uranium's melting temperature is 1132
