CRUST

  • The earth crust is 3-5 miles thick under the oceans and is 25 miles thick under the continents. The crust is located under the mantle . The crust is made of oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, and magnesium. The temperature of earths crust range between 200- 400 degrees. Earths crust is less than 1% of earth volume. No human has ever reached this location.

LITHOSPHERE

  • The lithosphere is 50-100 km thick. The lithosphere is located on the upper part of the mantle and crust. It’s made of rocks and brittle solid. The temperature there is between 300 and 500 degrees. The lithosphere is 15% of earth volume.
  • No human has ever been here.

ASTHENOSPHERE

  • The asthenosphere is 180 km. The asthenosphere lies below the lithosphere. It’s made of rocks and brittle solids. It can reach up to 1300 degrees. It’s unknown how much of earths volume it takes up. No human has visited the asthenosphere area.

MANTLE

  • The mantle layer is 2,500 km thick. The mantle is located above earths outer core. The mantle is made of ultramafic rock. The average temperature there is 200 degrees. The mantle takes up 82% of earths volume. No humans have visited the mantle.

OUTER CORE

  • The outer core is 2,200 km thick. You can find the outer core below the mantle. The mantle is made of iron and nickel. The temperature can reach 6000 degrees Celsius in the outer core layer. The outer core is 19% of earths volume. No human has stepped foot on the outer core.

INNER CORE

  • Earths inner core is 1,250 km thick. The inner core is at the center of earth. It’s made of nickel and iron as well. The inner core temperature reaches 10,800 degrees. It only takes up 6% of earths volume. No human has been here.
