PASSÉ COMPOSÉ

  • Same as the Past tense
  • Formed by combining present tense avoir or être and the past participle of the verb
  • For example: Subject + avoir/etre + past participle

AVOIR REVIEW

PAST PARTICIPLE

  • To form the past participle you have to use a specific ending.
  • It is just like adding on an "ed" in english.

PAST PARTICIPLE

  • Change -er verbs to -é
  • Ex: danser changes to dansé

  • Ex: finir changes to fini

  • Ex: répondre changes to répondu

AVOIR + PAST PARTICIPLE

  • Always conjugate avoir for the subject
  • The verb stays the same
  • J'ai + marcher = J'ai marché
  • Translated: I have walked

  • Translated: You have played
  • Elle a + vendre = Elle a vendu
  • Translated: She has sold

Irregular Past Participles
-avoir...j'ai eu
-être...j'ai été
-faire...j'ai fait
-prendre...j'ai pris
-Mettre...j'ai mis
-Boire...j'ai bu
-Coire...j'ai cru
-Voir...j'ai vu

ÊTRE VERBS

  • There are 16 that you use the verb être to form the PP
  • Être simply takes the place of avoir

ENDINGS

  • The être verb's endings may change.
  • They will change depending weather the subject is singular/plural
  • They will also change depending on if the subject is masculine/feminine

EXAMPLES

  • Katie êtes partie à 2:00.
  • Jack êtes parti à 2:00.
  • Nous sommes retournés.
  • Je suis retourné.
