BASES

  • There are several different types of bases in food science baking soda isn't the only one.

INFO ABOUT BASES

  • Contains hydrogen OH-ions
  • Bitter taste
  • Adds OH-ions in solutions
  • Corrosive (feels slippery)
  • Turns red litmus paper blue
  • Produces a salt and water when reacted with acid

FOODS WITH ACIDS

  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Yogurt
  • Apples

INFO ABOUT ABOUT ACIDS

  • Contains hydrogen H+ions
  • Tastes sour
  • Adds H+ions in solutions
  • Corosive
  • Turns blue litmus paper red
  • Produces a salt and water when reacted with bases
  • Produces hydrogen gas created when reacted with metals produces carbon B when reacted with bicarbonate

EXAMPLES OF MORE ACIDS

  • Hydrochloric acid (HCL)
  • Sulfuric acid (H2CO4)
  • Nitric acid (HNO3)
  • Carbon acid (H2CO3 found in sodas)
  • Uric acid (found in urine)
  • Ascorbic acid (also called vitamin c)
  • Citric acid (vinegar)
  • Tannic acid (tea and wine)
  • Tartaric acid ( grapes)
  • Malic acid (apples)

Oranges juice contains citrus acid, baking soda is a base used in backing and cleaning. Acids and bases are ionic compounds that are abundant in nature.
An acid is characterized by the presence of hydrogen ions. Bases contain hydroxide ions. When acids and bases dissolve into water they turn into ions.
