Early Life

  • Born February 27,1897
  • Born in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania
  • She wanted to join a choir class
  • At the age of 10, Marian joined the People's Chorus.
  • Marian was 12, her father was accidentally struck on the head.

Major Accomplishments

  • First black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera
  • At the age of six, Anderson sang in the choir of the Union Baptist Church.
  • By the late 1930s, Anderson's voice had made her famous on both sides of the Atlantic
  • Awarded the $10,000 Bok Prize that year by the city of Philadelphia.
  • Anderson used the award money to establish a singing competition to support young sing

  • She died April 8,1993.
