Mississippi River- the longest river in the U.S.

Appalachian Mountains- located in eastern North America

Rocky Mountains- a major mountain range in western North America

Great Plains- Midwest of the United States

Harbor- a place on the coast where vessels may find shelter

Canyon- a deep gorge that weathered away by a moving river

Great Plains native Americans- people who lived in tepees and hunted bison

Northwest coast native Americans- people who built totem poles and hunted whales

Southwest desert native Americans- people who built cliff houses and did a lot of trading

Eastern woodlands native Americans- people who live in wigwams close to lakes or rivers

Christopher Columbus- an Italian explorer who "discovered" America but thought he was in India
