Part 1

  • People and ideas is about how ideas change the way people think, act, live, and what they believed in.
  • The Enlightenment, philosophers, and the people, changed the way people thought about religion, culture, and forms of government.

Part 2 - The Enlightenment

  • Because of the Enlightenment, many famous philosophers, were looked up to for guidance about concepts from religion to government
  • The Enlightenment changed the way people went throughout their daily life.

Part 2 - Philosophers

  • The European philosophers from the Enlightenment, "examined monarchy, religion, government, education, law, prisons, history—even human nature."
  • Due to the philosophers critical thinking, many people questioned about what they were believing, who was ruling, etc.

Part 2 - Philosophers

  • One of the most famous philosophers from the Enlightenment was John Locke. He believed people had natural rights, which were rights that belonged to all humans from birth.
  • These rights also included the right to life, liberty, and property.
  • Locke had made people realize that they all had rights and that nobody, not even the government should be able to take them away.

  • Another philosopher was Alexander Pope, he believed in the value of common sense, and a moral life.
  • Pope opened the eyes of many people and through his poetry, people saw what good things there is in life.

Part 2 - People of the Enlightenemt

  • Denis Diderot, writer, talked about scientific reasoning and human knowledge in the Encyclopédie.
  • Because of this, Pope Clement XIII threatened anyone who was reading it with excommunication.
  • Many people with the Encyclopédie, was influenced and guided their own opinion.

Part 2 - People of the Enlightenemt

  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau "criticized the social order in The Social Contract" in 1762.
  • He felt that society placed too many limitations on people's behavior.
  • Also, he felt that the individual should be subordinate to the community.
  • Rousseau has influenced political and social thinkers with his ideas.
