PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Understanding by Design

and Differentiated Instruction

I want to teach 2nd or 3rd grade

In a rural community

Don't fail a student

because you won't take the time to learn how they learn best.

Importance of knowing

Students and their needs

- It is extremely important and relevant to know my students and their needs
- class sizes will be manageable
- each student needs to know they are valued
- get to know their background
- help create a comfortable learning environment the students will enjoy
- talk to my students
- have them do various activities or worksheets about themselves
- do group activities

What is important and enduring

for my students to learn about this topic?

- to understand and have gained knowledge about a topic no matter what their learning ability
- whether they have a language barrier, are gifted or talented, a learning disability or the average student
- I want each student to be able to learn and comprehend the material so they are able to apply it in their every day lives.

Ensure each student learns

effectively and efficiently

- by teaching to my students and their different learning styles.
- I cannot just present the subject in one way and hope every student walks away learning something
- be able to keep the students attention
-focus on the subject being taught
-relate the information to the student so they understand the subject

what matters most?

How does a teacher know their student has learned

- by viewing how my students have progressed over time
- observe
- have proof from different forms of assessments
- see how students expanded their knowledge, understanding, and skill from a previous point in the school year.

Impact of Diversity

in the classroom

- Diversity-
- my classroom may be impacted by:
cultural and language differences
their family
economic status
special needs
advanced learners

- this all brings a special quality to the classroom that will make teaching a challenge and adventure for me to
- I will make sure their needs are being met in the correct way.

Diversity Continued...

- students need to feel like an individual and also part of the group
- students will learn in the best environment possible so they can prosper, grow and gain knowledge on various topics

Logic of UbD and DI

as it is applied to the classroom

"Understanding by design is a way of thinking, not a program."
"Differentiated instruction is a way of thinking, not a formula." (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006)

Logic of UbD in my classroom

  • to teach my students important information they need to know
  • to push my students to apply themselves to their full potential

Logic of UbD in my classroom cont.

  • to make sure my students have a deeper understanding of the material so they are able to apply it in the future
  • to help turn my students into the individuals they are by letting them express themselves

Logic of Differentiated Instruction

  • I will teach to my students at a level of understanding where they can retain information
  • I will use different techniques to present information to the students
  • I will use technology to teach my students and my students will use technology as a learning resource

Logic of Differentiated Instruction cont.

  • use different resources like books, co-works, the internet, the community, field trips and any other resource that will help my students better understand
  • I will auditory, kinetic, and visually present information to my class
  • the students desk will be arranged in a format that will be the least distracting and least restrictive environment
