imagine

you are in college

you get a sore throat

you feel like you have the flu

you go to health service

you get a z-pack

they tell you have strep and need to rest

you don't get better

You go back to health service

they call your mom

she takes you home

to the local hospital

nobody knows what is wrong

You are getting really sick!

now your head hurts

really badly

they think...

Strep, Encephilities, Meningitis

then things go really bad

you can't breath well

you need a ventilator

your thoughts are confused

that night you have a stroke

actually 3 strokes

you are airlifted

to a big city hospital

where they save your life

...because a doctor there diagnoses your disease

You Rush to get A CT

your carotid artery is blocked

Diagnosis

lemierre's syndrome

... we never heard of it.

has your doctor ever heard of it?

does your health service know what it is

bacteremia, supperative thrombophlebitis, due to Fusobacterium necrophorum pharyngitis.

it follows a progression

It can be treated well if recognized

Here's what it is

This is how it works

Bacteria form a pocket in your throat

usually behind your tonsil.

The bacteria grow rapidly

this is when your throat hurts, you ache and have a fever

The body tries to block the bacteria

from going to your brain.

You form a clot in the internal jugular vein(s)

This keeps the bacteria from getting through

But also the blood flow is blocked

organs can shut down, strokes can happen

Doctors know what antibiotics

will kill this type of bacteria

antibiotics ThAT WORK

high dose penicillin and metronidazole. Intravenous clindamycin

Fusobacterium Necrophorum

This is the germ

The Bacteria destroys

RED BLOOD CELLS

Once you get the antibiotics

You get better...if

it didn't kill you

Before the doctor's recognized it.

young people die from lemierre's syndrome

Because it isn't recognized fast enough.

After thE INFECTION...

everyone's outcome is different.

If you had strokes

your brain was hurt

Depending on where the damage is

you will have a loss of movement, memory, acuity or vision..

A Friend who survived lemmierre's has double vision

Diplopia.  It takes a long time to heal.

She has to wear a patch

She can't drive. She is very brave.

But She is ALIVE

Because although this disease is

UNCOMMON

Lemierre's Syndrome is treatable
