Session 3: Designing effective assessment

Part one: aligning assessment

By the end of this session you should be able to explain why it is important to align session/course/programme outcomes, assessment, and content

This session is mapped to these UKPSF dimensions:

  • A3 (Assess and give feedback to learners)
  • K6 (The implications of QA and QE)
  • V4 (Acknowledge HE wider context)

This session also prepares you to engage with K2 ('Appropriate methods for teaching, learning and assessing in the subject area and at the level of the academic programme')

Part two: using learning outcomes to design assessment

QAA Subject Benchmark Statement: Music

Please read the benchmark standards for Music

Think of a title for a Music module

Use the benchmark standards to devise the assessment for a module on a degree in Music

Part three: making the assessment valid and reliable

Take the assessment activity devised by a neighbouring table and write some criteria for it

How will you know the assessment is valid?

Responses

Identify one way you can change your assessment activity to make it more valid or reliable

Part four: aligning the course design to the learning outcomes and assessment activities

The final step in alignment: what content will the students learn on the module, and how will they learn it?
