I will be using TPS for students to engage with their partners and think through the differences between essays and poems.

Students will pair and then I will use sticks to call upon pairs to share out their thoughts

Ineffective writing
I was really excited to talk to him like a jet plane went from my mouth, and then he said that he liked me and then i was all like whoa, he really likes me, but he didn't say it that way the way he said it was like how you doin?

An Example of ineffective writing,
I will be drawing sticks to see what people notice about this bad example of writing and how it could be improved

He swooped in like a jet,
Cool, cold, steel in his eyes,

When he spoke it was like a bomb in my brain,
I was shook

An example of effective writing where students will understand the economy of language more clearly,

More reinforcement on this when we actually move into freeverse

2 ways to become an effective writer

Personification is giving human qualities to objects and things

Imagery is using language to make the audience see your poem

Introduction of new vocabulary
I will review this and then give 2 examples of each.

I will then ask for a student volunteer to give a few more examples of each vocabulary word

:

A student will volunteer to read each poem.

Then I will cold call upon students to talk a little about what they noticed in each diamante poem.

Parts of speech review
Noun
Adjective
Verb
Verb -ing Words

This is a review over parts of speech which are important for creating Diamante poems.

I've found in the past a lot of confusion from students so to address this issue beforehand I wanted to take time to review each word, taking volunteers for the sake of time.

Parts of speech are written on their document next to the line provided with how many words are needed for each line.

Then I will ask questions about how to write the poem with students showing their understanding Using Stand up sit down.

Students will have a sheet with more complete directions printed on the sheet
