Complete (Simple) Sentences

  • Finished thoughts
  • Have a subject and a predicate (verb)

Subject

  • Who or what the sentence is about
  • Sentences may have more than one
  • Usually a noun
Think of the subject of a painting or a subject in school- it is the focus of the sentence.

Nouns

  • Person, Place, Object, Idea
  • child, store, dog, love
  • Ron, Target, Rufus, Tuesday

Subjects

  • The MAN rode a horse.
  • A brown HORSE jumped over the bars.
  • The CROWD gasped.
  • The RIDER and ANIMAL fell to the ground.

VErb/ Predicate

  • Tells what the subject is or does
  • Sentences may have more than one

Verbs

  • My grandmother HATES laundry.
  • She HANGS the socks and towels out to dry.
  • She GROANS and GRUMBLES until the work is over.
  • The old woman IS tired by the end of the day.

A SENTENCE DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

A fragment is an incomplete sentence. It is missing a subject or a verb.

Cheered at the game.
A hundred hungry crows.
Ran to the bus station.
The shaggy rocker.
Left his keys at home.
My energetic mother.
