WHAT IS CONFLICT??

  • Conflict: the dramatic struggle between two opposing forces in a story.

There are two types:
Internal
External

INTERAL CONFLICT

  • Character vs. Self
  • A choice between right and wrong?
  • Example: Your friends want you to skip school to hang out at the park? You know it's wrong, but you want them to like you. What do you do?

EXTERNAL CONFLICT

  • Conflict between a character and an outside force
  • Character vs. character
  • Character vs. nature
  • Character vs. society
  • Character vs. technology

CHARACTER VS. CHARACTER

  • "Good guy vs. Bad guy"
  • One character has an issue with another character.

CHARACTER VS. NATURE

  • Character has an issue with some force of nature
  • Example: A captain of a ship trying to fight his way home in a storm.

  • The character has an issue with a group, community, or society as a whole
  • Example: Katnis in The Hunger Games

  • Character has a problem with any type of machine
  • Example: A character being pursued by robots that are trying to kill him.
