TWITTER LINGO

  • Tweets: A 140 character mesage (this include spaces too!)
  • Followers: People that follow your account
  • Feed: The stream of tweets you see on your homepage of your followers

  • Handle: The phrase used for your username (@ceany_org)
  • Mention (@): Symbol used to refer to or tag other people's handle (@ceany_org)
  • Direct Message (DM): A personal 140 message between you and another user
  • Re-tweet: To share someone else's tweet on your account (can save you some time and still allow you to participate)

  • Hashtag (#): Keywords used to track a conversation (#charlietravels). A hashtag is a discovery tool that allows others to find your tweets, based on TOPIC in real-time--even from people you dont know.
  • Trending: What's hot in real-time (hashtags, topics, etc.)
  • Who to Follow: Recommendations of accounts to follow from Twitter

A well crafted tweet should have...

  • Content to promote a discussion. Think Re-Tweet!
  • At least 1-2 hashtags
  • Cross promoting handles or hashtags
  • Photos get the most visibility

  • Fun and relatable. Remember Twitter is a conversation and you want to engage your followers
  • Think SEO friendly. Use words that will allow you to connect with different audiences
  • Updated. As things change,change your profile to align with your interests
  • Make sure your location is accurate

But first, let's follow some people!

  • Top right hand corner "search" box.
  • Start to follow @ceany_org, and some of your fellow CEANY members!!
  • Search for your home institution, other organizations, leaders, etc.

Tweeting Tips

  • Add all of your necessary items first (links, handles, etc.) and work the content arount it.
  • Check to see if there is an official hashtag (#) for the event and the official handle (@) of the organization
  • Make sure your tweet holds content and something a follower can gain.
  • Like all SM, videos and pictures engage

Your First Tweet

  • Using the box that says Tweet, enter your content.
  • Use one of CEANY's official hashtags. #ceany #ceany15 #charlietravels
  • Tag @ceany_org
  • Bonus Points. Tag another handle (@).

Now...Re-Tweet!

  • Find someone you follow and re-tweet one of their tweets!
  • On their tweet, find the little "rotating arrows" icon and hit it
  • Remember: You can add additional content to a re-tweet.
  • Example: "Your content (Awee, or "Thanks @handle)" "Kudos to @ceany_org for a great #ceany2015 conference!"
