There are a lot of ways to analyze television

In this class we analyze television in two ways

1) We will ask "what can we learn about what families are like from watching this TV show?"

We can ask this about all aspects of families: gender roles, parental responsibilities, the nature of children, romantic relationships, etc.

2) We can also ask, "how does this show's view of things influence MY view of things?"

At this point, you have watched two television shows from the 1950s:
I Love Lucy
and Leave It To Beaver

So let's do some analysis!

Let's look at female gender roles in the 1950s. Think back to Lucy and to June. What do they have in common in terms of the female gender role in the 1950s? Pause the video and take a moment to jot dot your thoughts about this.

Let's look at male gender roles in the 1950s. Think back to Ricky and to Ward. What do they have in common in terms of the male gender role in the 1950s? Pause the video and take a moment to jot dot your thoughts about this

That's a good place to start. As we watch more television shows, we will do more analysis.
In fact, every week now, analysis will be a big part of your work.
