Y.B.T. CHARACTERISTICS

  • Females as long as 8 to 13 inches
  • Males as long as 5 to 8
  • Has a very yellow belly/shell
  • Females have longer claws and are larger than males
  • Unique yellow print on skin.

MORE FACTS

  • Life span: 20-30 years
  • They are omnivores
  • Some of their diet is aquatic plants, fish, and insects

REPRODUCTION HABITS

  • Their mating season is around the fall and spring
  • Females lay 6 to 10 eggs in the hold that they have dug up with their back feet. It takes 2 to 3 months for the turtle eggs to hatch.

SOCIAL CONTACT

  • Normally social but can still bite if frightened or hungry.
  • Sometimes hiss when trying to scare
  • They usually don't communicate much with each other but to lead their young or attract mates they use a low pitched noise underwater.

RANGE

  • Cover southeastern Virginia through the coastal plains

COOL FACTS

  • When basking they lift their legs and head.
  • They can live more then a quarter of a century.
