Module Two

The Elements of Pre-Training Scorers

Scoring Not Grading

This is not grading. Grading focuses on content and often a mixture of learning skills. The rubric you are using does not consider whether the student did the assignment. The rubric is concerned with a specific set of skills.

Grading can be a subjective process

We would like scoring to be as objective a process as possible

This is one of the most important issues in leading a calibration discussion

Faculty spend so much time grading, it is hard to switch gears

This is also why the assignment prompt is not given to scorers

You will get push back on this issue

This is a controversial issue

Scoring, using a rubric, but without an assignment prompt is an issue AAC&U feels strongly committed to

Please get in touch if this position doesn't make sense
