WHAT IS A TSUNAMI

  • A tsunami is a huge powerful and often destructive.
  • The wave usually begins as barely a ripple out in deep ocean water.
  • The name tsunami comes from the Japanese for harbour wave.
  • It was first used by fisherman who reterned to shore to find there harbour which they have not seen out at sea.

HOW DO TSUNAMIS HAPPEN

  • Tsunamis happen when earthquakes, landslides or volcanic irruptions disturb the ocean floor.
  • Tsunamis grow as they reach the shore and enter shallow water.
  • The to of the waves moves faster than the bottom, causing the wave to rise quickly.
  • The lowest point reaches the shore first and sucks coastal water.
  • The rest of the tsunami usually hits shore five minutes later!

WHERE DO TSUNAMI HAPPEN

  • Four out of every five tsunamis happen in the pacific ocean.
  • Remaining fifth occur anywhere where earthquakes or landslides trigger a large displacement (movement) of water .
  • In the past tsunamis have battered place such as coastal regions of Canada, at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and Turkey and Greece by the Mediterranean Sea.

WHY TSUNAMI HAPPEN

  • Tsunamis happen by the force of the energy.
  • It happens when you scream a lot by the edge of a frozen waterfall.
  • Tsunamis can happen anywhere and a lot of people are not ready for it.

WHEN DO TSUNAMIS FORM

  • A tsunami is formed when an under water earthquakes that occur along fault zones underwater.
  • These water leaves can rise rapidly and can be incredibly deadly.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY A TSUNAMI

  • One of the biggest and the worst effects of a tsunami is the east to human life because escaping a tsunami is nearly impossible, thousands of people couldn't survive a tsunami.
  • Since 1850 a tsunamis has been responsible for about 430,000 lives
