"Troll"
came from Trolleri meaning harmful magic and wasn't actually applied to the mythical creature until large amount of stories used the term in that way

Original trolls seemed to be descendants of the "JOtun" (Jotun were similar to titans in ancient Greece)

Trolls have been described in many ways throughout the tales they have been mentioned in. They can be anywhere between a fairly human looking creature, to a giant with 15 heads. They also werent all evil. Some tales described trolls as devine, kind spirits

As christianity began to take over Scandinavia, trolls became described as ugly, dim-witted, man-eating, giants.
