TRISOMY 13

DESCRIPTION

• Also known as Patau syndrome
• When chromosome 13's DNA appears in other cells
• Mostly when there are 3 copies of chromosome 13

SYMPTOMS

• Weak muscle tone
• Extra fingers/toes
• Cleft lip/palate
• Brain/spinal cord abnormalities
• Small or poorly developed eyes

CAUSE OF DEFECT

• Genetic disease
• VERY rare

WHEN DIAGNOSED

• Prenatal diagnostic testing

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED

• Prenatal testing in first trimester

TREATMENT FOR TRISOMY 13

• There is no found cure or treatment
• Sperm can have a third chromosome
• Un-controllable

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

• There are no preventative measures for Trisomy 13
