Tragic Hero

  • Must be of high or noble stature
  • Must have a tragic flaw or weakness - (Harmatia)
  • Experiences a reversal of fortune (perepetia) due to his tragic flaw
  • Recognizes that the reversal was brought about by the hero's own actions (anagnorisis)
  • The character's fate must be greater than deserved.

Other traits of the Tragic Hero

  • Must be relatable/likeable to the audience
  • The story should arouse fear and empathy in the audience (catharsis)
  • The downfall is both public and private
  • Their character/psychology must be consisten
