What was it

  • a series of measures introduced into the English Parliament by Chancellor of the Exchequer Charles Townshed in 1767
  • Town shed Acts imposed duties on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies.

When it happened

  • On April 12,1770, the British government to mollify outraged colonists by repealing most of the clauses of the hated Town shed acts
  • Initially passed on June 29, 1767, the Town shed Act constituted an attempt by the British government to consolidate fiscal and political power over the American colonies by placing import taxes on many of the British products bought by Americans, including lead, paper, paint, glass and tea.
