TOURETTE SYNDROME

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive, stereotyped, involuntary movements and vocalizations called tics.

TICS: SIMPLE OR COMPLEX

  • Simple tics:
  • sudden, brief, repetitive movements involving few muscle groups
  • Complex tics:
  • distinct, coordinated patterns of movements involving several muscle groups
  • Tics are usually triggered by excitement or stress.

SIMPLE TICS INCLUDE:
eye blinking, or shoulder or head jerking.
SIMPLE VOCAL TICS
repetitive throat clearing, coughing or grunting sounds.

COMPLEX TICS INCLUDE
combined muscle movements, purposeful movement (touching objects), or self harm.
VOCAL TICS:
coprolalia: uttering socially inappropriate words
echolalia: repeating of words and phrases

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

  • To be diagnosed by the DSM-5
  • at least two motor tics and at least one vocal tic
  • tics persist for more than one year
  • tics began before 18 years old

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

  • TS is inherited but the gene is unknown
  • There is no cure for TS
  • Medication can be prescribed to lessen the severity of tics
  • Tourette Syndrom decreases into late teens and early twenties
