basic

  • a mobile destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shape cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system.

type

  • tornadoes come from mainly two types of thunderstorm: supercell and non-supercell.
  • tornadoes that come from a supercell thunderstorm are the most common, and often the most dangerous.a rotating updraft is a key to the development of a supercell, and eventually a tornado.

detection

  • when a doppler radar detects a large rotating updraft that occurs inside a supercell, it is called a mesocyclone. the mesocyclone is usually 2-6 miles in diameter, and is much larger than the tornado that may develop within it.

forecasting

  • meterologists at the NOAA storm prediction center (SPC) issue daily forecasting, or convective outlook, for organized severe thunderstorms over the U.s.. based on current weather observations and forecast models . they also closely moniter areas they think are at higher risks
