THE FALL OF ROME

ANDREW YI, PERIOD 3

OVERPOPULATION/DISEASE (#3)

  • Simply put, overpopulation lead to disease.
  • As more people congregate in a small area, it is easy for disease to spread.
  • This lead to the drastic fall of population which ended the problem of overpopulation.
  • This, however, killed off most of the economy (farmers, tradesmen, etc)
  • Inflation and trade is now more difficult

The second reason is military problems. Again, due to the plague, barbarians and mercenaries were hired more. As such, loyalty of the army went to money rather than the Roman society as a whole.

FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP

  • After the last of the actually competent leaders (Aurelius), 22 leaders followed.
  • all of them were rather mediocre or simply terrible. They all died terrible deaths.
  • However, in their wake they brought a legacy of tragedy. The Roman empire was slowly falling.
  • They were weak-willed, greedy, and unable to make good decisions.
